Roberto De La Pena’s first experience with Difference Makers International was as one of the youth sponsored into our weekend leadership training. Walking into day one of the training, he was convinced it was going to be another boring “youth program” and was skeptical of the impact this could have. By the end of the weekend, he decided to return to the next scheduled training and bring his sisters and friends along with him. Five years later, he has continued on to become one of your DMI Youth Ambassadors, volunteered countless hours of community service with us, created a Blue Ribbon Assembly at his high school, High Tech High, presented on stage with the founder of DMI, Helice “Sparky” Bridges, and now for the first time has co-taught with Helice Sparky Bridges at a “Conflict Resolution Adventure Training” last Friday held at UCSD. The training was for his peers in the student government at San Diego City College to improve on their conflict resolution.
Roberto said the training was a “complete and total success.”
Thank you Roberto for being a Difference Maker and spreading our message..and Giving Youth A Voice For Change!

Resilience is a dynamic process whereby individuals exhibit positive behavioral adaptation when they encounter significant adversity, trauma , tragedy, threats, or even significant sources of stress.
Resilience is best understood as a process.

MUST READ THIS BACKWARDS. First read this poem top to bottom, THEN read the poem starting at the end. The shift is remarkable. It’s all about perspective!
Lost Generation.
I’m a part of Lost Generation
and I refuse to believe that
I can change the world
I realize this may be a shock but
“Happiness comes from within”
is a lie, and
“Money will make me happy”
So in thirty years I’ll tell my children
They are not the most important thing in my life
My employer will know that
I have my priority straight because
Work
Is more important than
Family
I tell you this
Once upon a time
Families stay together
But this will not be true in my era
This is a quick fix society
Experts tell me
Thirty years from now I will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of my divorce
I do not concede that
I will live in a country of my own making
In the future
Environmental destruction will be the norm
No longer can it be said that
My peers and I care about this earth
It will be evident that
My generation is apathetic and lethargic
It is foolish to presume that
There is hope
And all of this will come true unless we reverse it.

In our Mary Kay office we are gearing up for the New Year and working to ensure that our office is running like a well-oiled machine. While we pride ourselves on efficiency there is no greater joy for us than making sure each and every one of our Beauty Consultants feel important. They are the cornerstone of our business and each one is a unique individual but when you are blessed with 350 birthdays a year we needed to come up with a great idea to honor each while being able to cost-effectively ship out birthday gifts to them.
At our Christmas staff luncheon our boss, Vicki Auth, National Sales Director with Mary Kay, had the fantastic idea of creating a birthday card that does more than just celebrate the recipient but can bless those around them too! In the past we used the “Who I Am Makes a Difference” ribbons in training sessions and retreats but she thought we could incorporate the ribbons as their gift. The ribbon lets them know how much they mean to us while allowing them to share their joy with others.
In the card we created they get two ribbons, one for them to keep and one for them to give away, as well as the ribbon story. Once they give their ribbon away we encourage them to share their own personal ribbon story with our office. We then will select one story to be featured in our monthly newsletter.
